A shipped article = 3 mangrove trees.

For every Smukbird® item sold, a tree is planted

With every item you order, you support the planting of three mangrove trees in Madagascar. The trees that are planted as part of the reforestation projects of Eden Reforestation Projects® promote the diversity of flora and fauna, restore the coasts, provide a good income for the local population and allow mangrove trees to grow represent an enormous carbon sink.

Effects of Planting Mangrove Trees

Mangroves are unique ecosystems that occur across a wide range of the tropics and occupy the intertidal zones of more than 120 countries. Mangroves and coastal wetlands in general are of global importance because of the many services they provide to people and the planet. These include protection against storm surges, nursery areas for fish and other marine life, the provision of building materials and firewood, and an important contribution to stabilizing the global climate as a remarkable carbon sink.

Mangrove forests are enormous carbon sinks.

With the rapid increase in greenhouse gas emissions over the last century, the need for permanent carbon sinks has increased. The latest models suggest that it is no longer enough to reduce emissions and protect existing forests. Rather, to keep global temperature rise within “acceptable” levels, we need to rapidly increase the ability to sequester carbon. It is estimated that mangrove systems worldwide can store a staggering 20 petagrams of carbon. For a plant community that makes up less than 5% of the world's land area, mangroves are one of the most important carbon sinks, even more than many rainforests such as the Amazon. Since mangroves are a relatively fast-growing group of species, they also bind greenhouse gases very quickly.

Mangrove forests contribute to the conservation of wildlife and biodiversity.

Due to the destruction of forests, wild animal species lose their natural habitat and are forced to relocate, limiting their chances of survival. Madagascar is one of the world's greatest conservation priorities, with over 200 species of mammals, 100 species of lemurs, 300 species of birds and almost 300 species of amphibians. About ninety percent of all wildlife in Madagascar is endemic, meaning it only occurs on the island. The work of Eden Reforestation Projects® protects these wildlife species in Madagascar by restoring their natural habitats.

The reforestation of mangrove forests gives people a perspective.

For local people, working with Eden Reforestation Projects® offers a new perspective, a secure income and a way out of poverty, both for the workers and their families.

The global organization's projects support 10 UN Sustainable Development Goals (out of a total of 17) to empower local communities.

About Eden Reforestation Projects®:

Eden Reforestation Projects® is a non-profit organization whose goal is to provide impoverished villagers with fairly paid employment so that they can participate in the restoration of forests worldwide. Their “Employ to Plant” method leads to a multiplication of positive socio-economic and environmental outcomes. The goals of the project are:

  • Growing, planting and guarding large-scale reforestation projects,
  • Preventing deforestation by alleviating extreme poverty, through employment.
  • Restoring the environment through reforestation, improving fisheries, agriculture and carbon sequestration.
